Welding is a field with numerous code requirements and quality control specifications. Welding inspectors make sure that all welds are inspected and tested to comply with these engineering requirements. To do this, welding inspectors need to be trained and certified in inspection and testing techniques. A certification exam to test skills and knowledge is often required for employment. Certified welding inspectors are required for technical industries where high-quality welds are crucial for safety. Aerospace, nuclear technologies, water technologies, close tolerance manufacturing and the oil and gas industries all require ongoing inspection and testing of welds used to fabricate products and maintain equipment. Prerequisites
Though it is not required to be a high school graduate or have completed GED requirements, this academic level and 5 years experience in the industry will make it easier to quickly complete the required coursework. Those who do not have this level of academic achievement can still take courses and become certified, but 8 years of work experience in the industry will be required for those with an 8th grade education and 12 years for those with less than an 8th grade education.

Son Set Consultants On-Line-computer based training is designed to prepare applicants to complete the welding inspection certification exam. Photo ID is required at the time of sign-in on the day of the exam. Exam questions are multiple choice and the test runs 6 hours long. Two hours are devoted to the fundamentals, approximately 150 questions. The second part is practical application testing of 46 questions. The third section of the exam is an open-book test with 60 questions on code requirements. Certification is good for 9 years, after which you must be recertified. Son Set Consultants provides the required 80 hours of training for 9 year renewal of your certification On-Line. You must score at least 72 percent on all three sections of the exam. If you fail to achieve this, you will be required to go through a minimum of 40 more hours of training before you can take the test again. Salary by Experience
The salary for certified welding inspectors depends heavily on how much experience the inspector has in the job. With one to four years of experience, an inspector can expect to make between $40,000 to $60,000 a year. On the other hand, an inspector who has worked 20 years or more will make up to $100,000 a year
Hourly Pay based on City
The city where an inspector works affects the pay rate. Houston, Texas, for example, has a median hourly pay rate of $20-$36, whereas Charlotte, North Carolina, offers $17-$22 per hour. The large difference is in part narrowed by the different inflation rates in these cities, Houston being the more expensive city to live in.
Pay Rate by Employer
Pay rates also depend on the type of employer of a certified welding inspector. These include contract work, self-employed, and a private firm. Self-employed welding inspectors have the highest pay rates, with some making $50 an hour. Contract work is the next most lucrative, ranging from $25-$40 an hour.
Company Size
For those certified welding inspectors working with a company and not self-employed, a larger company generally leads to higher salaries, up to a point. In a company with between 600 and 1,999 employees, an inspector can make anywhere from $42,000 to $110,000 a year. Beyond that size, however, the maximum an inspector can make falls: a company with 5,000 to 19,999 employees will only pay its welding inspectors between $65,000 and $80,000.

The industry an inspector practices in influences the salary. For example, the steel and manufacturing industry pays its certified welding inspectors between $45,000 and $60,000 a year. The metal components fabrication industry, on the other hand, pays between $35,000 and $55,000 a year.
